St. Thomas Aquinas has several options available for students to engage in athletic activities. Our primary emphasis is to teach the children to display good Christian values and sportsmanship during play, to teach them how to play the game, to prepare them for high school athletics, and of course, for them to have fun while representing their school.
For elementary children (5th grade and below), we participate in the Catholic Youth League (CYL), which offers team sports in basketball, baseball, soccer and flag football. Our involvement depends upon a sufficient number of children at a given age level to be able to field a team.
For middle school children (5th through 8th grade), we participate in two leagues.
The first is the Catholic Middle School Athletic Conference (CMAC). All twelve Catholic middle schools in the Orlando area participate in CMAC for basketball, soccer, track and volleyball. Skill levels are generally split into three levels - varsity, junior varsity (jv), and junior junior varsity (jjv). Boys and girls teams are available for each sport, and the emphasis is a high caliber of competition to prepare the children for high school athletics.
The second is the new Osceola Christian Athletic League (OCAL). This is a new league formed in Fall 2005 and consists of five Christian schools in our immediate area - St. Thomas Aquinas, Holy Redeemer, Trinity Lutheran, Heartland Christian, and Southland Christian. Teams are generally co-ed and an emphasis is made on the children's enjoyment and teaching the game, although it can get pretty competitive.
